Settlement Nuevo Amenecer- Villa Maria Del Triunfo (Lima, Peru)
The human settlement Nuevo Amanecer is one of the newest, smallest ones of VII Zona Nuevo Milenio, Villa Maria del Triunfo, which has around 30,000 residents composed of families with babies, their elderlies, people with disabilities, and aggravated health due to Covid 19. These families live in huts, small fragile dwellings made out of something similar to plywood. Many residents of this settlement are immigrants from provinces poorer than these areas in Lima, Peru. To make matters worse, Covid 19 has affected them the most. The pandemic help for basic necessities was temporary, minimum or nonexistent for many.
This settlement is located on the top of high hills where the weather is harsh due to its strong winds, and it has a colder than usual weather. There are no roads, sidewalks and they have to reach their homes by walking up on steps made out of rock. And, go down on a regular basis to buy their groceries for their meals, for some children to attend school, etc.
It’s hard to believe but there’s no sewer, they have latrines which are sort of outdoor toilets instead of regular toilets, there’s no drinking water, they need to buy water from “camiones sisternas,” trucks that carry water up the hill. These families collect the water in buckets and store those buckets in their homes.
Nevertheless, during the toughest times of the shutdown of this pandemic, these families even in their extreme poverty united to create “Olla comun,” which is a group of women cooking together to help their neighbors who could not even afford to have a meal on their tables. Five or Six women would bring their groceries, pots and pans, kitchens in a hut to cook for everyone, in this way they will share their cooked meals among everyone so no one would have to go hungry that day.
This nonprofit organization has contacted these families directly through a Peruvian volunteer who lives in Peru to make sure the donations go to them. We are keeping receipts of purchases, videos of these families receiving the donations, and trying to minimize our expenses in order to maximize our help to these families. All this information is available upon request. We believe that without our help these families will not survive this pandemic.
